PRODUCT F.A.Q
What is a split system air conditioner?
The most common residential split-system air conditioner is an air conditioning unit made up of two units - an outside unit, the compressor, and an inside air outlet unit, usually referred to as the "wall hung head unit". The two units are connected by pipes that carry refrigerant. An alternative to the standard unit is the multi-split system, which has multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit. A split-system air conditioner can be used for cooling and heating.
What size split system do I need?
This is based on the room size that you are trying to cool. Also taking into other factors such as the sunlight direction, insulation, carpet etc. We recommend getting us to give you a visit and work out the size of the unit you require.
Does the right size unit really matter?
Yes it does. Choosing a bigger size unit then what is recommended will only be a waste of money and may operate inefficiently. It may also cause vibration and outdoor noise level which may cause disturbance to the neighbours especially for strata residence. A small size unit will not get you the comfortable temperature that you require and will result in high electricity bills because the unit is being overworked.
Who should install my split system?
By law, all installations of spit-system air conditioners must be carried out by a licensed technician. They are qualified to complete all of the tasks required to successfully install a split-system air conditioner, including connection of the pipes that carry refrigerant through the unit. The refrigerant in the unit, if it escapes into the atmosphere, will contribute to global warming. A licensed technician has the appropriate training and skills to minimise the risk of this happening.
What is an inverter system?
An inverter system lets your air conditioner alter the speed of it motors in response to cooling demand. The result is controllable and energy efficient.
What is the difference between a split system and a multi split system?
A split system has an indoor and outdoor part that is connected together. Meanwhile a multi split system has just the one outdoor part that is connected throughout the house through multiple indoor parts installed in each room. So while a split system powers up the one room, a multi split system powers up the whole house from one outdoor part.
Is a cooling-only system better than a heating/cooling system?
Cooling systems are not necessarily better than combined cooling/heating systems, but they are generally cheaper to buy. Air conditioners that can both heat and cool can save you money, too, because you don't have to purchase additional heaters.
What do I do if my unit needs repairing? All servicing and repairs must be completed by a technician that holds a full refrigeration and air conditioning licence. They have the correct qualifications to undertake the work required, including work involving handling of refrigerant. The reason that your unit may need servicing or repair could be due to an issue with the components that hold and/or transport the refrigerant within the unit, causing the refrigerant to leak out of the system. If a leak exists, all affected parts must be repaired or replaced before the unit can be refilled with refrigerant.
What should I do with an old air conditioner?
If you decide to throw out an air conditioner that is no longer working, there may still be refrigerant inside the unit. If the unit is not disposed of properly, then the refrigerant may escape into the atmosphere, which will contribute to global warming. Before you place the air conditioner in your hard rubbish collection or take it to the tip, you'll need to have the refrigerant 'recovered' from the unit by a licensed technician. The recovered refrigerant is forwarded by the licensed technician to Refrigerant Reclaim Australia (RRA) which is the sole facility in Australia approved to destroy refrigerants in an environmentally friendly manner.
What are the typical installation costs of a Split System unit?
Installation costs of split system units can vary due to electrical wiring requirements and positioning of outdoor units. A typical professional installation of a single split system can cost at least $650 and may incur up to an additional $200 in electrical wiring costs.
What is a ducted air conditioner?
The unit itself come in 2 parts and is built to cool more areas. The indoor unit is installed in the ceiling cavity of your home. The evaporator coil within the indoor unit conditions the air from the room. The fan inside the indoor unit then circulates the conditioned air back into the room. The outdoor unit is installed on the outside of your home. It is connected to the indoor unit via interconnecting pipe work which carries the refrigerant. The compressor in the outdoor unit circulates the refrigerant between the indoor and the outdoor units.
What brand is better?
The old adage 'You get what you pay for' exists for a reason. The dearer units are generally (not always) more efficient and or quieter. They also go together better and give you a better finished product. This translates to easier servicing should the need arise which in my opinion makes the additional purchase costs worth considering. However, some of the cheaper brands provide excellent value for money and offer very good performance. Final decisions should be based on specific unit performance and value for money. There is very little difference between the mainstream and top units sold these days. It's only in the very cheap units that quality begins to suffer.
How much is the installation?
It fully depends on the size of the unit required, zones required and other factors. Please speak to one of our sales person to get a personalised price.
